  1. I completely agree. It is mad though that for each spine player it would have to beat our current transfer record
  2. The other point is that we might not want to rely on one striker but like Liverpool who have Firmino, Salah and Mane, which from memory were not renowned as clinical goal scorers pre Liverpool. As a combination though are lethal and that included Mane scoring 22 league goals last season. We aren’t at that level but similar methodology maybe a good tactic for us seeing as we can’t spend 100m on one world class striker although I heard Neymar was a Villa fan
  3. I assume Smith has seen something in him that he can access to the benefit of the team. Maybe he wasn’t used quite right or he’ll be our false number 10 and we’ll be buying another striker to compliment him. The old sheringham/shearer type combo (not saying players are same attributes but a false and a direct strikers).
  4. I’m not saying we should pay 20m but we also have to remember how well he fitted at Villa, he’s only 26 and in his prime, he’s definitely talented, he loved playing for us, played well and fits Smith’s style of play. Buying another player will be a risk and we are still likely to have to pay well north of 10m for a player like him. Again I’m not saying do it but we have to weigh the risks of moving onto another player for a core position especially when he’s at least one of two CBs we need to buy.
  5. Depends on needs to be honest. If other teams needs players but need to sell first, or if a good price comes in or if they feel the player might not be as good at those tournaments. Just as a player can shine at a tournament, they can also fall flat on their face and maybe 5 interested parties (clubs) get reduced down to 1 club and therefore prices reduces or another player shines at the tournament. It's all about desperation to sell/buy or money. But i take your point that i assume most will happen after individuals holidays or tournaments are completed.
  6. and Liverpool are looking at Etheridge......do me a favour!!!! I'm sure Etheridge wouldnt consider going there to be number 2 goalkeeper and sit on the bench for the next few seasons. We knew that prices were going to be high, I'm sure Suso and Smith factored that in. It's just going to be a long summer of who blinks first and some good negotiation tactics. My nerves are not going to last the summer but for some reason I believe in the senior management team and owners we have now (despite being let down because of many false dawns from previous owners).
  7. We can’t afford to go back down, we were lucky this time. If it happens again then we are going to be so far away. This window Suso has to blow the doors off. I’m not saying buying silly players but buy quality from the championship and then a couple of real quality signings. Buying just replacement players even if young is incredibly dangerous I believe, just as going wild and buying whoever and however is dangerous. We have to be aiming for somewhere in the middle.
  8. Wow I’m almost starting to feel bad for them, must just suck being them especially at the moment with everything going on and then being in our shadow and we are flying.
  9. Problem is that half of our core team were loans, Hause, El Ghazi, Tammy, Mings and Axel. Now we have signed two of those, looks like two are no go’s and we hope on Ming’s. A fair number of players that were rotating but core like Jedinak, Whelan, Hutton etc have left. So as for core you are struggling past Grealish and McGinn re core players. Then arguables like Taylor and Hourihane and the debate whether they are good enough for PL. love to keep the core but let’s hope we can keep/acquire the best of those above and then turn it into Smith 2.0 team with similar spirit and togetherness with the addition of quality.
  10. Yeah because Butland would come to us to sit on the bench. You can argue for because Steer has earnt it, you can argue against it because of sentiment. Reality though is that Butland won’t sit on the bench.
  11. It’d be nice to have them in a preseason together though. How many times over the decades have I heard about if XXX had a good preseason under their belt or it’ll take time to settle because they came in on deadline day. Next season is so important to us to stay in the division that the fewer the issues the better. I do though understand that things take time for various reasons.
  12. Glad that we are still in the market. To me that team would need an exceptional season, no major injuries or suspensions and a lot of luck could scrape 17th position. We need more obviously and thankfully we seem to be doing that.

    John Terry

What a goal though! Loved Carragher screwing up for Bolts goal as well, great finish by Bolt
  14. Salifou and his shadow.......deadly!
  15. To me it’s not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Next year we are going mostly to be playing teams better than us. Our defence is going to be battered every week because we are likely to be underdogs more often than not. The goalkeeper will be the key position next season. Good shot stopper, claims crosses, commands his area, organises his defence and doesn’t make silly mistakes often. For me, the goalkeeper position could be the difference between relegation or not. For me, we must get the best keeper we can whatever the cost. Assume 40 points safety, a goalkeeper saves two winning positions from draws, that’s 4 points, that’s 10% of what we need Remember we just had 3 years in the championship, the play off final was a 170m game. The way money keeps going up that could be a lot more than that next time. 20m for a keeper, if that’s what it costs, is a necessity for me not a luxury.
  16. I’m with you. I know it’s all opinions but don’t understand how fans determine value around the edges. Whether we pay 15m or 20m can only be determined good or bad in hindsight at the end of his time here. I agree if it’s 15m vs 50m for a player but I’d like to understand why fans when looking at a player have definitive values in mind especially in a market that over the last 30 years has inflation that is incredible.
  17. We need options though not just a first 11 or a fixed style. Not saying Maupay is the answer, I just think we need options and depth. We also have to take into consideration not every player will work out either coming up from the championship as one of our players or somebody we have brought and the same is true of foreign players. So we need depth/alternatives as the window is then shut until Jan 1st when it maybe too late to retrieve.
  18. Hope his middle names are Wesley ‘Kroos Mbappe De Ligt’ Edens then
  19. Completely agree hence why I’ve downgraded my expectations to 33 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses.
  20. My memory is going but didn’t we used to complain that we don’t get a home game first and last game of the season....same again! Glad we have Boxing Day home game, love having an excuse to get out after Xmas day.
  21. Yeah I would like to know. Can’t we just keep the one we have, bad enough the change last time so really don’t want to do again or revert.
  22. There is Norway these puns can continue without mods intervention
  23. Any chance we can Greece some shady agents hands and get some quality on the cheap Anyway enough of this, back to work I’m China focus on a completing my project.
  24. Hope we aren’t russian any deals and paying over the top
