  1. And the players we might sign are reduced each day whilst we wait for someone to take these players off our hands KSV? With the window about to slam shut the game we are playing is high risk and can we be sure that we will be the only club looking at our potential signings and those players will wait around until we are ready to sign them? Sounds too much like sell to buy for me..
  2. Shawcross and money for Dunne would represent progress but not sufficiently profitable player trading for us at the moment so I guess any replacement (and surely there would have to be would be one) would come in at a cost of say a third of the cost that bringing in Shawcross would.
  3. Well his availability is known to one and all now so I trust we are not waiting for someone to go before we finalise this deal because that would not suggest we are backing the new boss sufficiently and we would run the risk of someone else coming in for Vlaar.
  4. GT wanted to sign him but our then chairman bulked at the fee he was quoted and was then offered Tony as a cut price alternative and took him as he needed to spend to avoid a tax bill as I recall.
  5. No, it took a great manager to decide he would make a full back but he had always looked a good player to me with Chelsea and in his early games with us (which included his debut against a club our new manager is fresh from (although I must admit I needed to jog my memory on that) and I think he started as a right winger).
  6. I think Sheringham said we had signed the wrong one of those two Millwall forwards and he was proved 110% right. But I also felt bringing Withe in was a mistake.
  7. If Matthew turns out to be half of the player those players became in a Villa shirt then we have a bargain and a manager who can spot one villanfromluton.
  8. Although I have seen worse forwards than he had looked before he signed for us although not too many internationals in a Villa shirt who were playing for us.. :winkold:
  9. I do villanfromluton I was at both cup ties and we gave Bob some terrible stick. "Six foot two, eyes of blue, Sammy Morgan's after you...". Welcome Matthew by the way. He seems a player who is happy to be here and who our manager is happy enough to work with. Sir Ron Saunders signed a couple of marquee signing such as Dennis from Coventry and Andy Gray but he did not splash the cash as such and also signed the odd less well known player who became a legend with us such as Allan Evans.
  10. Only those who are Irish, Scots or Welsh or have close family links to those countries TRS-T. :winkold: You also need to be a half decent player and that has included the likes of McGrath, Best, Law and Charles....
  11. Yes LL there are questions to be answered and you also have to wonder why the family have not checked over the past 50 odd years that the medals are still there or at the very least that the bank is.
  12. Bankers proved as competent then as they are today then. :winkold: I would trust the bank will do something about finding them now because otherwise those that have yet to be found will soon be gone forever having been found by metal detectors. I would also guess the family could now expect to get the money the bank owe them for those other medals due to their negligence.
  13. Good news that the boss has his two amigos alongside him now. I wish their replacements well for all but their games against us next season and look forward to the friendly banter between our 2 clubs in our games with them. We have the best of the moves but they have found a decent team to replace them. Now we need to get some more players to fill our shirts.
  14. Agreed VillaChris so possibly Bent might have been worth a look instead?

Thanks for the information Milenko and all the very best with your treatment.
  16. Brazil 1970 for me. But the 1966 winners might have given them more of a game than Italy did in the final had Banks played in the QFs and Bobby Charlton stayed on to keep Beckenbauer busy. For me Brazil's 3 out of 4 World Cups trumps Spain's 1 World Cup & 2 Euros but I would pay good money to see the Brazil 1970 side take on the current Spain team and I think Spain might just edge it now...but Pele and the rest of his team are OAPs now.
  17. Pearce seems to be using this squad selection as an ego trip. Not picking Becks or any Scot or NI players will not go down well with those who gave him the job and he should have been thinking more about them and the paying public than those who decided he would no longer be involved in the England set up.
  18. Lost in translation I guess SikhInTrinity. These translations are not free for no reason they are free because they are not very good. I also got: 'This is a dream for each player, I hope that it continues". ' "It is now wait till the clubs from it come'. ' I stood to draw came on the point by and then this past. I am 27, that am an age on which you yet a new challenge seek. For me is the prime Minister League the best competition in the world. I needed not to think after that long about". 'It is top here all. If the clubs eruitkomen, the furrow can be me so round". That's all Dutch to me and he seems he may be a bit of a Cantonna when it comes to press quotes. But, I guess it may be something along the lines of: It is a dream to play in the PL which is the best league in the world, it is time for me at 27 to seek a new challenge and I am up for it so it is now up to the clubs to agree a deal.
  19. Thanks for the information Feyenoord. The price looks right, we need a ball winner and we may be able to match his wage demands. He would also add to the list of Villa players that have performed well at your fine stadium albeit the rest of the list did so 30 years ago.
  20. A rare but very good example Rev and I agree 110% villanfromluton:
  21. How about these for a half dozen? Morty, Macca, Rioch, Gray, Lochhead and Deano.
  22. brommy as I recall, Villa Park was withdrawn as a venue for the 2012 Olympic football tournament because we were instead to go ahead with plans for major construction work in 2012 with a view to hosting 2018 World Cup games and increasing our ground capacity. The World Cup was always odds against and the construction work appears to have died a sudden but not an unanticipated death. A statement from Locog, the London 2012 organising committee at the time said: "It has been agreed with Aston Villa that because they are unable to make firm commitments to the project, the best course of action is for Villa Park to be withdrawn as an Olympic venue".
  23. Not really, money talks and football players will move at the drop of a hat now despite the fact that it may see them sitting on a bench as often as playing and the impact they make in what is a short time in football is thus reduced.
