  1. I didn't expect us to win this game as i stated in the pre match thread.

It is going to take ALOT of work to get this team challenging for promotion.

    I have written off promotion.

These players do not fit DS style.

Only Grealish out of our midfielders has a good first touch, it is going to be very tough to get these players to play one touch, two touch passing football.

Our wingers are not good enough even Bolasie.

My concern is that we are in the depth of a season and we are transitioning everything.

I hope we can remain patient.

  2. As DS illuded to previously he has not had a lot of on ball training with these players so they are struggling.

We have confidence issues and tactical issues.

We have a high percentage of possession yet we are unable to make any use of the ball we do not move the ball quickly on counter attacking possessions.

Our width is very weak and we are unable to coordinate passes in the midfield to supply our strikers.

We look likely to score from set pieces.

I blame Bruce for the squad he has left us with. A very imbalance squad.

Chester is lacking confidence and he has no one to challenge him for his position because we are so short in that position.

DS has his work cut out and there are a few players that need moving on.

I genuinely cannot see us being promoted.

Calum O'Hare can't even get on the bench again.  Very poor decision DS imo!

he played midweek he is clearly recovering and come back from injury..

  4. I will also reserve my judgement on DS.

He has had very little time to work on our players and he is still assessing the squad.

He will certainly need to bring in his own players and also get rid of a few in our squad.

I think we have players that are good quality but i have a feeling some do not fit the style of our head coach.

Nyland needs more work however we are lacking a proper goalkeeping coach to really work with him.

DS needs a lot of time and support to do his job.

I am going to be very patient with him.

I do sense that it will take some time for the VP faithful to become comfortable with modern football.

    Very underrated comment.

Whilst I was watching the game, i could hear fans saying shoot when we were looking for an opening or becoming discontent when we playing it around the back four.

I hope the fans become accustomed to how we now try to play.

Even when the line up was announced the fans began to moan about the line up. However DS has had very little time with a full squad and we have a game on Tuesday and Saturday so he will be rotating the squad.

I am surprised by DS because I had very low expectations of him especially because of the role he had at Brentford.

He is about the coaching and tactical aspects of the game.

I liked when he said that he played Grealish deeper to keep possession although it felt as if he did not want to do that because of Jack's attacking qualities.

1st half the passing was really good.

In particular I was watching how many touches each would player take before passing and whether we would look to make short passes or long passes.

Our players were averaging around 2-3 touches in the 1st half however at times we became unstuck because players were not making themselves available to receive the ball.

DS will be working on this on the training ground so that our possession game is a lot more fluid.

The 2nd half was like watching SB's team play so i am sure that this will be ironed out in the future.

The positive aspect is that at this level we have a group of very talented players and they are capable of taking in tactics and picking up things quickly.

I am excited for the future but I am also nervous about the Norwich game because Carrow road is a difficult place to go to.

  6. We started well and at times looked like a different side however we became sloppy in the 2nd half and we should have won by more.

Nyland kept us in the game also.

McGinn is the real deal and is a premier league player.

Dean Smith has got his work cut out however he has a better squad at his disposal.

Good win there is much more to come from us.

  7. Good performance 1st half.

I think there have been changes to our play, our build up play appears to be improving and our CB's look comfortable on the ball.

We are pressing them and forcing mistakes when we do not have the ball.

Our final ball does seem to be lacking in some ways but that can be worked on.

I am also uncomfortable with Grealish on set pieces..

  8. I certainly think that he would want to look at some of our youth players in the coming weeks especially Bedeau.

I would assume Pitarch does not have extensive knowledge on lower league talent so DS will hopefully discuss plans in scouting and sourcing lower league talent.

  9. Thomas Frank and the board are pretty much saying that he (Thomas Frank) played a major role in the development in Brentfords style in football on the training ground.

    Only time will tell.

Can we just appreciate the first 21 seconds of this clip.

Imagine in a few months starting a game like this.

  10. Dean Smith will have to be careful until the summer transfer window.

There are huge influencers in the dressing room that may not be fit for Smiths style of play.

    Jedinak, Whelan, Taylor & Hutton.

Those players  command huge respect in the dressing room and Dean Smith needs those players on side so he can settle in.

The moment Dean Smith decides to isolate them from the entire squad is the moment the whole players will turn against him and Terry.

He needs to box clever and have those players on side until next summer.

  11. Some quotes from Brentford fans

    Quote

"I have no real qualms about him leaving. I enjoyed him as our manager, he was a passionate coach and brought about a period of calm and evenness to our first team. We played some brilliant football under him at times, and attracted the begrudging respect of many of the larger teams in the division/country. He always spoke well and was a good ambassador for the club. I don't blame him for taking the job - very few people get the opportunity to manage the club they support, and to do it with a salary many multiples of what he was earning before is an easy decision. He had a great deal of trust and backing from the staff, both here and at Walsall, but I imagine it could well be a bumpy ride working for those in charge of Villa at present.

But he was a cog in a large organisation, and he and his career will have benefited massively from the Brentford machine. He made us look good, and we made him look great. Alongside some of the brilliant performances were some very poor runs, and a weak mentality that saw us drop loads of unnecessary points over the seasons. I hope we make a next appointment that keeps us steady off the pitch, and exciting on it. Whether that's Frank or someone else, the DoFs have been proving to us over the past couple of years that they've learned an awful lot and have clearly planned for this at some point."

    Quote

"Not too worried about him going even though he did a good job, he had a great structure to work in.

I’m more concerned about him trying to sign Mepham and/or Konsa given Villa’s defence but also Sawyers and Maupay with McEachran a possibility given his contract being up."

    Quote

"I am genuinely sad about this. I have liked having DS in charge. I didn't always agree with him and think the success he has had with us has always been about the system as well as him; but he is a thoroughly decent, open-minded individual who tries to treat people and do things in the right way. I fear for him at Villa TBH but hope he does ok, so long as it is not at our expense!"

    Quote

"I'm disappointed that he's going. But I can accept it & wish him all the best.

The football was incredible at times, even better than the best we'd previously witnessed at GP, under Mark Warburton. He came in when the club were at a cross roads and has been fantastic as a head coach.

I like Dean Smith & wish him all the best at his & his dad's club, back where he's from. He deserves it & we've helped him!

The king is dead, long live the king. Come on you bees. Cheers Dean/Richard."

    Quote

"I think it's a question of time and personally I fear he might not get it at Villa. The days of an Alex Ferguson type guy who comes in and revolutionises the entire club seem to be gone and whilst I really like DS, he's an important part of an effective machine, not necessarily a master tactician who can make it all work by himself. If he's allowed to do his thing properly I think the squad you've got is so strong at this level you should be up there. The idea of John Terry being a dealbreaker seems very flawed to me (unless he's coming out of retirement to play cb!)"

  12. Dean Smith will be bringing his own staff too.

I believe that would be Richard O Kelly as his 2nd assistant head coach as well as a few others.

The compensation package must include some additional members of staff.

Brentford have mentioned that they will make a further announcement on their first team football structure.

    This is a thin defence.

Managers discuss with their assistant(s) what's a good plan for a game - then the manager has final decision - at every club.

Tactics - are now nothing to do with the manager - even though the manager has final say on the team? Tactics are not relevant to who plays?

Adapted tactics? see previous example by @Johnnyp

Mentoring is 'keeping the morale up'?

    You asked me several questions.

I gave you answers I did not realise that it was a defence..

Anywhoo you have your opinion I have mine.. thats it

My opinion is that he will not get us promoted this season even with his backroom staff.

  14. 13 minutes ago, Jareth said:

Ok, well who picked their team, decided tactics, adapted tactics in a game, or mentored players?

He has the final decision on picking the team but it is discussed with who two other assistants and head of analytics.

Tactics - Rasmus Ankersen & Phil Giles know how they want Brentford to play, they have put necessary staff in place to help assist Dean Smith on the training field.

Adapted tactics.. Well a lot of Brentford Fans have been critical of his decision making whilst the game is being played

Mentored players  - I think he helps keeps the Morale up.
